I've lived in Smithtown for the past 20 years. Most of my jobs that I have worked while attending a local college have been in or around Smithtown. My latest job however, has me going all over the place, and I really get to see what the rest of Long Island is like. Especially Suffolk County.
We really take a lot for granted in Smithtown. It's a very nice area, not super rich, but it is of mostly upper middle class residents. As you go around Long Island, you see areas where people don't leave their cars parked in the street at night, and I doubt very many of these people leave their front doors unlocked either.
It could be the extremely high property taxes that are paid to live in this area, or it could be just a mixture of how people act towards one another. As someone once said, "It's not where you live, its HOW you live." And I would say that 98% of the people I've met in Smithtown or just the general population in the stores are very friendly. Church on Sundays is usually full of a ton of community members who are kind to one another.
I also have to thank our civil service members, the 4th precinct of the S.C.P.D. which covers Smithtown seems to be full of very professional officers, who I have never felt mistreated by during any type of encounter. Our Fire Department is also top notch. And it's thanks to these people that we sleep safely in our beds at night.
Next time your out of town, take a look around. You'll see just how nice we have it here.
